Context: This work was collaboratively created for the final project in Electronic Technologies Art I class. I took charge of coding, circuit design and conceptual design.
Concept: Doodling is part of children’s nature, but is also sometimes curbed: children are afraid that they are not drawing well enough or parents feel bothered to clean up the mess accompanying doodling. Our toy, the Magic Cubes, seeks to tackle both obstacles to liberate children’s creativity, and let them enjoy fun. Inspired by an interactive remixed musical instrument called Reactableby a research team at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, and Sketchpaddeveloped at MIT’s Lincoln labs, this toy aims to lead children to easily paint beautiful water ink images with their creativity on computer screen by placing cubes on an acrylic board. Water ink painting is integrated to allow users to experience Asian culture and various hand-writing elements are also introduced to allow for a great freedom of artistic expression for different users.
Techniques Employed:3D laser cutting, soldering and welding, circuit design, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, Arduino and Processing.
